 Breast Augmentation- An implant, saline or silicone is used to increase the size of the breast. There are three different types of incisions that are used to place the implant. Periareolar, inframammary and placement through a distal location, These distal locations include the arm pit or the belly button. The implant can be placed above or below the muscle. Type of implant, incisions and placement are a matter of each individual patient and surgeon preference.
Silicone Breast implants have returned to the market. They offer a more natural feel then traditional saline breast implants. They come in a variety of shapes and styles. I prefer the moderate plus profile as it resembles a natural tear shaped breast.
Breast augmentation is one of the most common procedures in plastic surgery. Woman are generally pleased with their results,
they look good and feel better about themselves. Some woman will say they now wear clothes that would never consider before the surgery.
The advantage of silicone breast implants is that they give a softer, more natural feel with less rippling. They are more expensive then saline breast implants and may require a larger incision depending on what size is chosen. Silicone breast implants were removed from the market in 1992 due to concerns of medical illness. Clinical studies have shown that silicone breast implants are safe. ll implants can leak and follow up examination as well as imaging studies need to be performed post-operatively.
